Age of Decadence

Age of Decadence is a new MMO game like RuneScape made by Iron Tower Studios. Age of Decadence is based in Roman times.

AoD ( Age of Decadence ) has a "survival guide" that Iron Tower posted on their forums (find below).

This game will definitely be an interesting  thing to keep an eye out for in the MMORPG market.

THE AGE OF DECADENCE COMBAT BETA SURVIVAL GUIDE
(taken from http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,1208.0.html )

Welcome to the Age of Decadence combat beta! It's set in the arena district of Maadoran from the full game. You'll get to pit your character's fighting skills against various opponents with the ultimate aim of being crowned the arena champion. Becoming the arena champion will not be easy, or even very likely (just try getting life insurance as a professional gladiator), but we hope you have fun trying. The main purpose of this beta is to test the combat system from the full game and tweak it if necessary based on player feedback, as well as detect any performance or stability issues. Some story elements have been added for your amusement, but they don't represent the scope of options that will be available in the complete game. Bear in mind that everything you'll see is a work in progress (the animations are being improved as I write this). The beta allows you to change the screen resolution, shadows and other settings from within the game (either from main menu, or by pressing ctrl-o at any time), but unfortunately anti-aliasing cannot be turned on from the game. This is a restriction of the game engine being used, and can be easily worked around by simply switching on anti-aliasing in your graphics card settings before starting AoD.

A regular demo featuring the entire first location and the full range of gameplay options (factions, multiple quest solutions, large variety of dialogue options, alchemy, crafting, sneaking, thievery, persuasion, diplomacy, lore, trickery, disguise, forgery, and more) will be available upon the game's release.

The following guide gives you a quick overview of the most important concepts of the Age of Decadence combat system.

1. INTRODUCTION TO COMBAT

The combat in Age of Decadence is turn based, which means that each participant takes a turn and has a certain number of action points to use performing actions during each round. When you start the demo, you'll be presented with the character creation screen where you name your character, select a gender, choose a weapon speciality, allocate stat & skill points, and (if you wish) tailor your characters appearance. Statistics and skills that are not relevant to combat are disabled in this beta, but you can still see them to get a taste for the final game. Once you've created your character, you'll find yourself standing in front of the arena master (he's the one with robes and no axe). To the right there's a stall with a trader who you can buy or sell weapons and armour as you progress as a gladiator.

Right click on the ground to walk around and do a bit of sightseeing if you wish. To get a better view of any interesting architecture, the camera can be rotated by holding down the scroll wheel and zoomed by spinning the scroll wheel - after all it may be the last chance you have! When you're ready, equip your starting weapon using the inventory screen (key: i) and left click on the arena master to discuss the next fight. He'll give you some background on your potential nemesis - pay attention, he's too lazy and aloof to repeat himself to the likes of you. You may either choose to enter the arena to fight immediately, or take some more time to prepare first. For instance if he tells you that you're going up against a crossbowman, you may want to consider buying or equipping a shield before the fight. During combat accessing the inventory screen will cost 4 action points, so it pays to be prepared beforehand.

Once you enter the arena you'll start opposite your opponent and, after a little taunting to start the proceedings, the fastest combatant will get to act first. When it's your turn, you will see a grid of squares surrounding your character. Take note of your hit points on the left and your action points on the right of your two weapon slots. On the far left is an information window that gives you more details about exactly what's going on during battle. Blue coloured squares are ones where you've enough action points to move during this turn, and if you hover the mouse over one the action point cost of moving to that square will pop up. Green coloured squares are those you can attack with your currently selected weapon (slot highlighted in yellow) and this is dependent on weapon reach and remaining action points. Move the mouse over a potential target on a green square and the name of the target, their rough state of health, and the likelihood of hitting them will pop up. Dark green means you can move or attack that square, and red means that you can do neither.

Combat can be initiated at any time by clicking the crossed swords icon on the interface, or by pressing Space. Clicking on the crossed swords icon again, or pressing Space, will end your turn (or combat entirely if there are no living enemies within range). Additionally, in certain circumstances, the option to initiate combat will be available via dialogue. Your character's dexterity determines how many action points are available during each turn. Each action performed - swinging a sword, accessing your inventory, throwing a net, moving away, etc - has an associated AP cost. For example, a normal attack with a dagger (a fast weapon) takes 3AP, while a normal attack with a two handed hammer (a slow weapon) takes 6AP. Accessing your inventory during combat takes 4AP. There are two weapon slots, so either two one-handed weapons or a single two-handed weapon can be equipped at a time. The weapon's damage, range, and AP cost (modified by your stats, attack type, and ammo type) are displayed in the weapon slot. Right-click on the weapon slot to open a menu with the available attack options.

When you've killed your opponent, you should loot their stuff as your reward for victory by clicking on the square they were standing on when they died, and then exit the arena by clicking on either of the two barred gates on one side of the arena. Rotate the camera if you can't see them. Each vanquished foe will immediately reward your character with skill points which you can then allocate at any point to the skills of your choice on the character screen (key: c). You probably want to focus on only one or two skills with any single character if you plan on being champion. Repeat this process until your character takes a dirt nap or becomes the arena champion (trumpets and a fan club not guaranteed).

2. CHARACTER SYSTEM

Primary statistics:

There are six primary statistics defining a character's innate physical and mental abilities. Between them they determine the starting values of skills, bonus Skill Points awarded, derived stats (HP & AP), as well as modifiers for range, reaction, and accuracy. In the full game, they are also regularly checked in dialogue and interactive text segments to allow access to ability specific gameplay options. In this combat beta, both INT and CHA are fixed at 4, since the focus of this combat beta is to demonstrate and test the combat and combat related abilities.

Strength (STR) - determines a character's damage modifiers and maximum carry weight.
Dexterity (DEX) - determines a character's Action Points and combat sequence.
Constitution (CON) - determines a character's Hit Points and poison resistance.
Perception (PER) - determines a character's range and accuracy modifiers.
Intelligence (INT) - determines a character's bonus Skill Points, received per 10 SP earned.
Charisma (CHA) - determines a character's reaction modifiers.

Derived statistics:

Hit Points (HP) - determines how much damage a character can soak up before dying, you're dead if it reaches 0 or less. (HP = CON x 5 + 5)
Action Points (AP) - determines how many actions a character can make during a combat turn. Different actions have varying action cost. (AP = DEX + 2)

Please note that once determined during the character creation phase, your character's HP will not be increased - unlike many other RPGs, there are no character progression levels and the HP value is static throughout the game. Consider your decisions carefully.

3. ATTACK TYPES

All weapons (except for crossbows) have fast, normal, and power attack options.

Normal attacks (key: n) - standard attacks that have no modifiers.
Fast attacks (key: f) - cause less damage, costs one AP less, but are more difficult to avoid. Generally most effective against fast, lightly armored opponents.
Power attacks (key: p) - cause a lot more damage, costs an extra AP, but are easier to avoid. Generally most effective against slow, heavy armored opponents.

Aimed attacks - aimed attacks all cost two extra AP's and have different to-hit penalties:

Torso – normal damage range, no penalty, chance to find a weak spot in the armor. (DR halved)
Arms – fast damage range, -10% to hit, disarms on a successful hit.
Legs – fast damage range, -20% to hit, cripples (movement cost doubled) on a successful hit.
Head – power damage range, -30% to hit, but a chance of knocking the opponent out.

Special attacks: whirlwind (melee weapons), impale (spears only), flurry (daggers only), multishot (bows only), burst (repeater crossbow only). Due to time constraints, not all special attacks are available in this beta.

The versatility of crossbows comes from the different designs available: one-handed, double-shot, scoped, repeating with a magazine, etc. Unlike bows, crossbows have to be manually reloaded. You can right-click on a weapon to see the options available.

Certain weapons are more suited for either fast or power attacks and thus provide an increased damage range when used with these attacks. For example, a simple dagger does 1-6 damage for a normal strike, 1-3 damage for a fast strike, and 2-8 damage for a power attack. However, a curved dagger is better suited for fast, slashing attacks and less suited for powerful thrusts, so its damage ranges are 1-6 normal, 1-4 fast, and 2-7 for power attacks. However, a wide-bladed dagger is the opposite, so its damage ranges are 1-6 normal, 1-2 fast, and 2-9 for power attacks.

4. CRITICAL STRIKES

The likelyhood of critical strikes is governed by the attackers critical strike skill compared with the defenders vs critical score, which is the higher of armour vsCritical, shield vsCritical, or 0.6 x CS-skill. Strikes to the head are compared to the higher of the helmet vsCritical or 0.6 x CS-skill. It's very important once your character is pitted against more skillful and experienced opponents that they have some defense against critical strikes, as many fights are all but decided by well placed or lucky blows. Even if you're build like a tank, getting stabbed in the liver puts a crimp in anyone's style and longevity!

5. WEAPONS

All weapons have 3 important statistics: damage range, attack speed in action points, and reach. Additionally, crossbows have fire/reload speed and, in some cases, multi shot capacity. Some weapons have special abilities like ignoring shields or cutting into the enemy's armor more effectively.

The game offers eight different types of weapon. Each type has its own passive trait that increases along with your skill with the weapon. The higher the skill, the higher the chance to score the special effect associated with your weapon.

Daggers - bypass armor.
Swords - increased chance of a Critical Strike.
Axes - split shields.
Hammers - knock your opponent to the ground.
Spears - interrupt attempts to close in.
Bows - increased chance of Critical Strike.
Crossbows - knock your opponent down.
Throwing - bypass armor.

6. ARMOR

Armor doesn't increase your chance to avoid attacks. In fact, it makes hits more likely as it reduces your mobility and makes it harder to dodge incoming attacks. However, armor absorbs some of the damage from attacks when you fail to dodge or block an attack successfully. Basically, using armor trades Dodge and Action Points for Damage Resistance.

Sets of armor have different statistics, so you must consider carefully what your fighting style is, and choose your equipment accordingly. Going for the heaviest armor and the biggest weapon may not be the best choice in Age of Decadence.

Armor statistics:

Dodge penalty, Sneak penalty - self explanatory.

Damage resistance (DR) - how many points of damage from each attack this armor absorbs. For example, if DR is 6, then the first 6 points of damage per attack will be absorbed by the armor without any harm to your character. Note that damage reported in the info window is the amount of damage taken, after the amount absorbed by the armor has been subtracted, which is also reported.

Max Action Points (MaxAP) - the maximum amount of action points per turn. If Max AP is 8, then even if you have 12AP, while you're wearing this armor your effective AP each round is 8.

Versus critical (vsCritical) - protection against Critical Strikes (attacks that target weak armor spots and vital organs).

7. HELMETS

Helmets protect the head of the wearer, however they do not add to overall defense. Their statistics are only utilised when struck on the head. Not all opponents will aim attacks at the head, but leaving it unprotected will definitely be considered an open invitation by many more experienced and skilled opponents.

Helmet statistics:

Damage resistance (DR) - usually less than most armor DR, so even if you fail to score a critical hit, you'll cause more damage if you can actually hit someone's head.

Versus critical (vsCritical) - the heavier the helmet, the better it protects you against critical strikes, but the more it limits your field of vision.

To-hit penalty - a helmet's design may limit your vision, thus reducing your to-hit chance.

8. SHIELDS

Shields are used for blocking incoming strikes depending on a fighters' skill at blocking, and is an alternative to dodging attacks. Blocking is only used when holding a shield and having a block skill which is greater than dodge. All shields, except for bucklers, have a Block bonus which is offset by a to-hit penalty. Any novice can hide behind a tower shield, but the shield strapped to their arm will slow them down and they won't be able to attack as effectively as they would have without the shield. There are times when dodge characters may want to consider using a shield for the defense against critical strikes if gives them, even with the associated dodge and to-hit penalties.

Shield statistics:

Block bonus, Dodge penalty, To-Hit penalty, Sneak penalty, Versus critical (vsCritical)

Versus Ranged (vsRanged) - shields provide superior protection against all ranged attacks, but certain weapons, like pilums and dagger-like armor-piercing bolts (30% chance) can go through shields, completely ignoring them. All shields are wooden and can be split in half by axes. Once split, a shield is discarded and can't be repaired.

9. AMMUNITION

For the sake of convenience, all arrows and bolts have been combined into universal ammo. Originally, the game had arrows and bolts, but 3 different types times 5 different metals times various crafting upgrades times 2 (arrows/bolts) was too much to manage and one universal ammo was forged by the Elven council. True story.

Ammunition types:

Regular - standard ammunition.

Armor piercing - causes less damage, but penetrates through armor better. DR is divided by 3 to determine the effective value, i.e. a DR9 armor will absorb 9 points of damage if shot at by regular ammo and only 3 points (9/3) if hit by armor-piercing ammo. There is also a 30% chance that it will pass straight through a shield, making a block ineffective.

Jagged - causes more damage, but is easily stopped by armor. DR is multiplied by 3 to determine the effective value, i.e. a DR1 armor will absorb 3 points of damage, but a DR4 armor will absorb 12 points of damage.

10. METAL TYPES & CRAFTING

The Crafting system is not available in the combat beta, but some of the later opponents in the arena will be using crafted equipment which you may find useful. In the full game, armor and helmets can be crafted to increase DR, Max AP, vsCritical, or lower penalties. Similarly with weapons to increase vsDR, decrease AP cost, or increase damage. Shields cannot be crafted in AoD.

To improve your equipment in the beta, either loot people or buy items from the local trader. The trader's inventory is updated twice – upon earning the Gladiator and Executioner ranks. There are 5 metal types in the game: Bronze, Iron, Steel, Blue Steel, Meteor. The difference between metal types is hardiness (read it as higher damage and damage resistance), weight, and price.

We'd like to remind you that this demo is solely focused on the combat of Age of Decadence. In the full version of AoD combat will be just one of many different ways to progress through the game.

StellarDawn

I don't want to start any crazy rumors about I have to. The new name of MechScape is probably StellarDawn. This is a fact rumor. What that means is that if it's true, then it's a genuine fact. StellarDawn was registered in April 2008, so it's nothing new. We've been tracking it for over 1.5 years now.

StellarDawn fits the description of a game. It is Stellar (about space and stars) and it is Dawn .. which is a new beginning or a start. Andrew Gower said MechScape is all about exploration. StellarDawn isn't the first phrase that comes to mind when you think exploration, but Gower went on to say that that's how he picked RuneScape. He made two long lists of words and then randomly generated combinations. The same has happened with StellarDawn.

Earth Eternal news

I just got word from Zybez that the game Earth Eternal is nearing launch. There are big things in store for Sparkplay Media, the creators of Earth Eternal. They will have to compete with Runescape. Earth Eternal has a good shot at stealing Runescape's very young players because of the furry based characters in EE that appeal to children.

As for the beta, only 100 people have it currently. More will get it soon now that the game is nearing launch - hopefully sometime before Christmas of 2009.

Here's the full story:

Joining the fray of free online fantasy games, Sparkplay Media is preparing to launch its massively multiplayer online game, Earth Eternal.
The fantasy game runs in a web browser, with no download required. But it also has a plug-in option that allows gamers to play the game in full 3-D. It’s a light-hearted fantasy game that will eventually come with its own social network. The company hopes the game is unique enough to stand out from the competition as one of the more interesting fantasy role-playing games.
The game is operating in a closed beta now and will be launching an open beta later this summer. The download can complete while you’re designing your game character. Although the game will be free to play, players can pay real money via micro-transactions for virtual goods. For instance, they can buy more powerful swords, or they can earn them for free by accomplishing tasks within the game.
You may be wondering why the world needs another fantasy online game. But Matt Mihaly, chief executive of Sparkplay, says the game combines elements of social networking with an action-oriented fantasy role-playing game. On top of that, it tries to bring the best graphics yet to a free-to-play 3-D browser game.
You can also customize your character in all sorts of ways so that it will look different from other characters created in the same class of animal. There are no elves or orcs, but there are about 22 different animal races that players can use for their avatars, or virtual characters. You can also customize the place where your character hangs out: a kind of tree-covered valley, dubbed a Grove, that you can customize as well. You can drag and drop various landscape items and decorations to create your own unique sanctuary.
Sparkplay was founded in 2006 as a division of Iron Realms Entertainment, a text-based dungeon game company. Mihaly founded Iron Realms in 1996 to make text-based dungeon adventure games such as Achaea and Dreams of Divine Lands. That company remains focused on text-based games, which are a smaller part of the game market.
Iron Realms spun out Sparkplay in 2007 to create Earth Eternal, advancing it $750,000 in funding. Sparkplay raised an additional $4.25 million in February, 2008, from Redpoint Ventures and Prism VentureWorks. Mihaly’s first idea was to create a “hyper violent, hyper sexualized” online game like Funcom’s The Age of Conan. But the team tamed down the idea over time as it decided to aim at low-end technology requirements (so that the game could run on just about any PC).
The game competes with a wide variety of popular fantasy games, including free-to-play titles such as Sony’s Free Realms, Wizard 101 and Jagex’s Runescape. Other rivals include Acclaim, Outspark, NCSoft, and Nexon. Perfect World is a kind of competitor, as is World of Warcraft. But those games require much heavier downloads.

Runescape Free Trial

There seems to be some confusion among new players. They think that the Free-to-play version of Runescape is a limited free trial. That is not correct. The non-Member Runescape is a completely free trial which is unlimited. You can keep playing Runescape for years on the free trial if you like. All games have a trial period but Runescape's is never-ending. Pretty good, right?

Runescape carting around the wagon

Do you want to sit in a Runescape go-cart and drive around the world? It seems crazy but it's possible. I've done it. It wasn't in Runescape though, it just felt like Runescape. Okay, so there I was playing a game just like Runescape called "Free Realms" and there is a quest that lets you drive a cart. It is like mario cart without the special effects in the game. After driving the cart it got me thinking why Runescape doesn't have a cart racing minigame. It probably does and I don't know about it, but there's a good chance it doesn't. What is your opinion? If you want to respond, just write a reply in your own blog and link to this.

Runescape Private Servers

Runescape's public servers are too public, so I believe Jagex should make Runescape Private Servers. They can be hosted in random places around the world, and of course allow Runescape players to cheat. I heard a rumor that Jagex have thought about bringing Runescape Classic back, but make it cheatable. So, players will be allowed to set their stats to 99 and punch in the amount of gold they want. You're probably calling "BS" on this so let me explain the reasoning behind this. Runescape Classic was prone to gold selling (real world trading) and hacks of accounts. To avoid these scams, cheating will be allowed. This way, nobody would bother buying Runescape gold coins because you can get them for free in the game! Also, nobody will scam or hack each other's Runescape accounts and there won't be any powerleveling. Why bother when you can just cheat twice as easily.

What words do Jagex use to describe themselves?

Can you think of a few words to describe yourself? Don't think sentences, but instead just think key words. Well, sorry to cut your line of thought, but let me tell you what words Jagex use to describe themselves with:

browser games, clans, communities, community, computer games, free games, fun orb, funorb, games, internet, java, mmorpg, mmorpgs, mmos, online games, online rpg, r/s, role playing games, rpg, rs, rune scape, runescape, video games

Okay, first of all, who uses "r/s" to describe Runescape? Lol. Oh Jagex...

The Mechscape unofficial LiveJournal blog has gone online today. It marks the first time somebody has used their pinky fingers to crack open a pistachio. Less importantly, it is a new way for readers to study Mechscape, the game of Sci-Fi and cloning.

Mechscape Quest Guide

I'm doing a mission quest on Mechscape right now. It involves fighting off the interstellar armies of Lord Vader, turning them around, and fly behind them in my spaceship. It is actually not a spacecraft and instead a "mech". A mech is a robot vehicle that is able to transport you from place to place and let you do other tasks such as quests in Mechscape.

Jagex has made many Mechscape mission quests. The lava harvesting mecha quest requires you to bring shale to the headquarters of the Mechscape galactic empire and trade it using the quest points from experience gained at the Grand Exchange.

Jagex Ltd, the creators of Runescape, have made a trailer for their MMORPG game about 8 years late. But better late than never, right? It is fairly good in that it shows all the things you can do in Runescape such as fighting, quests, monsters, and many cinematics ;-)

Runescape Calculators

The shiny new Runescape Calculators on Zybez won't solve your Runescape treasure trails for you, but they'll be able to give you so much moar. By moar, I mean:
1. They will let you understand where you are
2. And where you need to go.
3. This is called "goals".
4. It will tell you which things you need to do in order to level up faster.
5. And how to gain more experience in a shorter amount of time and with less effort.
6. You can also find out how much experience you'll gain if you have limited amount of stuff already to level up on.
7. You better check yourself before you wreck yourself and don't confuse yourself too much.
8. Head over to Runescape Skill Calculators to find out more (or should I say "moar") now.

Loliphant has stolen your tv

If you're reading this on a table. In other words, a log table. You must have realized. That. What? What did you say? Sorry, I can't hear you because, this is like text. You can't talk to text. Stop talking because I can barely hear you. Anyways, I'm going to tell you about the Loliphant that stole your tv. The black one. The black tv that is. No, not the black loliphant because they don't need haircuts.

Their trunks are in the back of the car. It is called the trunk. Their boots are also there, in England. In the rear of the loliphant you will find a steak. A steak is best eaten soft and loliphantistic.

I cannot reconfirm your pottery level because there is no such skill like that in Runescape. Instead it is called crafting skill in Runescape. You should know that. Or, wait, why? Why not? Because.

I listen to the news on the Zybez Radio for Runescape.

Availed has a LOLIPHANT in his pants

Availed is some trans-guy that is attacking some websites or so he boasts using a botnet. Kids if you don't know what a botnet is, don't worry, you'll probably have one by the time you turn 8 - like everybody does at that age - and then you'll grow out of it when you turn 11.

Anyways, this Availed guy has a LOLIPHANT in his pants. That is why he is how he is. Too bad he can't do anything to take down this website ... because he's a weakling. His botnet is no match for my blogspot blog. Muahahahahha... Availed has been DEFEATED by my words.

Mechscape MSW comes from a robot named Billy. He knows how to bite and he knows how to fire laser beams at people. He's the only Mech in Mechscape that can fly around and perch on pods. The pods then fire laser beams at the moon to ignite it on fire. There are only a few group actions you can do before you realize you can build a city of Mechs and fire their rockets to win minigames with ease.

The Chosen Commander Runescape Quest Guide

The Chosen Commander Runescape Quest Guide is for the latest and 150th Runescape quest.

This is not a Runescape quest guide but instead help on understanding the story of it.

Here's the quest excerpt from Runescape.com

Ever since Dorgesh-Kaan made contact with the surface, the cave goblin adventurer Zanik has helped to defend the city from Sigmund's villainous plots. Now Zanik has disappeared, her fate and whereabouts unknown, and Dorgesh-Kaan is more vulnerable than ever.

Captain Undak of the Dorgeshuun guard is responsible for the city's defences, and he needs your help to investigate a possible HAM attack - but this will only be the start of your adventure. The mystery of Zanik's disappearance will be resolved, and the truth behind a goblin prophecy will be revealed, as events move inexorably towards the realisation of Zanik's destiny. Your adventures will include the discovery of a new Agility course, learning more about the history of the Dorgeshuun, and uncovering the plots of the Big High War God.

The Chosen Commander is the conclusion of a quest series that began with The Lost Tribe. I've had enormous fun working on this storyline over the last few years, and I've tried to give what I think are the best elements of the previous quests a final outing here. I hope you enjoy it.

Mod John A
RuneScape Content Developer

---------------------

Summary:
Where to start The Chosen Commander:
Speak to Captain Undak in Dorgesh-Kaan.

Requirements to complete The Chosen Commander:
Level 46 Agility
Level 46 Strength
Level 46 Thieving
Must have completed Land of the Goblins
Must be able to defeat several foes up to level 125

---------------------

To be reminded of what’s happened so far in this quest series, start the quest and then log in to the QuestHelp system – you’ll find a complete summary of all the earlier quests, from The Lost Tribe to Land of the Goblins.

To go along with the quest we're releasing a new Knowledge Base article, History of the Goblins, which is in the Miscellaneous Guides section of the Knowledge Base. We're also releasing a developer forum post looking back over the quest series, which can be found in the forums under Recent Updates. If you enjoy the goblin quests you may also want to read the newest Lores and Histories story, The Chasm of Lights.

In Other News...

To mark the end of the Dorgeshuun quest series, we’re releasing a limited-edition zip-up hoodie on the Jagex store. It’s a limited run of only 2,000, so click here to get yours now!

If you’re logged in to RuneScape and navigate away from the game screen, you will now have to click on a confirmation box to confirm that you want to navigate away from the page. This is to make sure that you don’t accidentally lose your game window.

We've made a couple of changes to the party room due to concerns about abuse by real-world traders. Firstly, drop parties are now available only on two worlds (131 and 152). Secondly, players must now enter their bank PIN (if they have one) before putting items into the drop chest. We're sorry we have to do this, but we can't let real-world traders ruin the party.

We've added a wave-counter interface that will pop up at the start of each round in the TzHaar fight caves. This means you should now find it much easier to track which wave you're on.

Male ogres have been graphically reworked and improved to bring them in line with the recently-updated female ogres. They look tougher and stronger than ever, but don't worry; they're still not the smartest creatures around!

Players will no longer increase their drop-value potential on PvP worlds if they repeatedly cast the basic strike spells.

We've reduced the likelihood of your getting AMEs if you're burning incense in your house, or if you're in building mode. We've also reduced the likelihood that you’ll get AMEs in the Chaos Tunnels and on the Dorgesh-Kaan agility course.

Email registration for new accounts is now optional, although we would still advise you to enter your email address when registering, so that we can help you if you need to recover your password.

Google email: Interest based AdSense ads

Hi,

We're writing to let you know about the upcoming launch of interest-based advertising, which will require you to review and make any necessary changes to your site's privacy policies. You'll also see some new options on your Account Settings page.

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category. To learn more about your associated account settings, please visit the AdSense Help Center at http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=20310.

As a result of this announcement, your privacy policy will now need to reflect the use of interest-based advertising. Please review the information at https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=100557 to ensure that your site's privacy policies are up-to-date, and make any necessary changes by April 8, 2009. Because publisher sites and laws vary across countries, we're unfortunately unable to suggest specific privacy policy language.

For more information about interest-based advertising, you can also visit the Inside AdSense Blog at http://adsense.blogspot.com/2009/03/driving-monetization-with-ads-that.html.

We appreciate your participation and look forward to this upcoming enhancement.

Sincerely,

Random Events Guide Guide Links: Introduction Random Events Casual Encounters Historic Events Rewards Credits Random events are no longer associated

Runescape Random Events Guide
Introduction Random Events Casual Encounters Historic Events Rewards

Introduction

Random events were placed in RuneScape (the game) to stop cheating by players - people gaining xp without being at the Runescape keyboard. Randoms can occur at any time and any place - while you are doing anything! All you have to do is respond to them. Both members and non-members alike can get all the Runescape random events listed, EXCEPT where specifically indicated.

In this guide, you'll find all the Runescape different random events that can occur while you're playing. We tell you what they do, and what you should do when one happens to you. When you finish, you are returned to where you were picked up, and if your inventory is full, your reward will be under your feet.

Jagex has announced that if you fail a random, you will be randomly teleported to a safe location but your Home teleport will be disabled for a while. You may also have your stats slightly reduced (but not Hit points nor Defence). Jagex also stated that players who continue to fail puzzle randoms will be treated the Runescape same as failing (above), rather than being stuck forever. Players who succeed at randoms should get them less often!

The Rewards from Mechscape, random events have been changed - in most cases, players can now choose their own reward!

What you should do:

Click on each piece of the Runescape hive on the Runescape left and drag it to the Runescape proper level on the Runescape ladder, following the Runescape example. from Mechscape, top to bottom: rounded top, plain, hole, and legs. Click BUILD when done. the Runescape random event gift will include a special additional option: you may choose to receive some flax as your reward.
Beehive Random

Mysterious Old Man
"Greetings"
The Maze

Sometimes, the Runescape Mysterious Old Man will teleport you to a maze. Complete the Runescape maze (get to the Runescape centre) as fast as possible, and you will receive a valuable reward - possibly hundreds of runes, arrows and ores. There are also some chests inside the Runescape maze which you can search, but it slows you down. the Runescape longer you take to complete the Runescape maze, the Runescape less your reward will be. Your run energy will be 100% the Runescape entire time you are in the Runescape maze. the Runescape Mysterious Old Man has a right-click bank deposit feature for your convenience. He also follows you through the Runescape maze. the Runescape reward structure of this event has not changed - there are no choices.
Maze Random
Mime

The MOM teleports you to a mime artist, and you have to imitate his actions. the Runescape reward choices include an emote animation (glass wall, glass box, lean or climb rope), or a costume point. Costume points from Mechscape, this event can be spent to purchase Mime clothing (Mask, top, legs, gloves and boots).
The stage Special mime items New emote animations
Mr. Mordaut
"Hey, ..., surprise exam!"

The MOM teleports you to the Runescape classroom of demon professor Mr. Mordaut, where you will take an exam. You must answer three out of six questions correctly to be teleported back where you were and receive a reward. the Runescape exams are related to skills, such as fishing or combat. One type of question is to identify what is next in a pattern. Examples include: pick, ore, hammer - metal bar. Armour, bar, ore - pickaxe. Tinderbox, logs, candle - lantern. Item patterns can be seen as range, mage, combat, mining, fish, food, etc. the Runescape other type of question shows 15 items laid out like cards, and asks you to select three related to the Runescape hint text. Melee, fishing, mystical (magic), jewellery, thirst (drinks), covering your face (masks), and "me hearties" (pirates) are a few of the Runescape hints. Click the Runescape "thumbs up" symbol after you've selected three.

When you've finished the Runescape test, you are told to leave by a specific door - the Runescape others won't open. If you get four questions wrong, you will be teleported to a random location. If you got three questions right, you'll receive a random gift box reward. the Runescape choice under "XP item" will be a book of knowledge, which you can spend on any skill. the Runescape xp will equal 15 times your level in that skill. (If your selected skill is level 41, you would get 615 xp.)
what comes next? find 3 matches
Pinball

This time the Runescape MOM challenges you for a little game. It's called pinball, but human pinball would be more correct. You have to tag 10 poles. You must tag the Runescape pole with rings around it. If you tag a wrong pole, or try to leave (between the Runescape trolls who serve as flippers) before you're finished, your score will be set to 0, forcing you to start all over again. Walk south past the Runescape trolls to exit when you have scored 10, finishing the Runescape game.
It's pinball, baby!

Cap'n Arnav
"Ah, hello there, laddie!"
Capt' Arnav What it does:

Formerly a farming random, pirate Cap'n Arnav will now whisk you away to his private island where he buried his treasure. He will ask you to help him get the Runescape lid off the Runescape treasure chest by solving the Runescape combination lock puzzle. Mysteriously, his island includes a bank deposit, if you need it.
What you should do:

If you ignore him, he'll mug you and teleport you to a remote location. If you decide to help him, you'll get a puzzle screen like the Runescape one below. To solve the Runescape puzzle, all you have to do is match the Runescape centre row of pictures with the Runescape correct word shown on either side, using the Runescape up and down arrows like a slot machine to make "three in a row". When you're done, click the Runescape "unlock" button. You get five tries to unlock it. When you solve it, leave his island via the Runescape exit portal.
Capt Arnav Selection

The "Certers"
"Hey there, I need your help..."
This is Miles What it does:

Ever notice that you can withdraw multiple items from Mechscape, your bank as notes? In RuneScape Classic, "notes" were called "certificates" or "certs", and they were obtained from Mechscape, three brothers: Niles, Miles and Giles. Since retiring from Mechscape, the Runescape "certing" business, Niles, Miles and Giles have been amusing themselves giving simple tests to passing players. One of them will kidnap you to their posh office.
What you should do:

Talk to him and answer the Runescape multiple-choice question he asks you. All you have to do is identify the Runescape spinning object and select the Runescape correct answer from Mechscape, the Runescape choices you're given. If you fail the Runescape test or ignore him, he'll try to convert items from Mechscape, your inventory into banknotes, then teleport you away! Notice - there is a Bank Deposit Box in the Runescape office, so you can bank before you exit through the Runescape portal! See below for a sample test:
Is that a Helmet?

"Evil" Bob
"You're my slave now..."
Evil Bob Random

Not to be confused with "Bob the Runescape Jagex Cat", this feline's name tells you everything you need to know about him. Friendly, he isn't, evil, he is! Evil Bob likes to drag unsuspecting travellers away to a warped plane of reality called "ScapeRune" to serve as his slaves. Everything in "ScapeRune" is backwards.
ScapeRune

Talk to Evil Bob's slaves and you'll see a picture of a certain statue on the Runescape shore. Grab a net spawn and fish near that exact statue. You will fish up a cooked fish, which you will have to uncook on a nearby pot. Then use the Runescape fish with Evil Bob, and he will fall asleep. Now's your chance to escape! Run to the Runescape portal, and you'll be teleported back to where you were.
Cat statue Cat statue Cat statue Cat statue
Prison Pete
Prison Pete

Prison Pete needs your help to escape the Runescape clutches of Evil Bob. Pull the Runescape lever, and pay close attention to the Runescape ears and body of the Runescape desired balloon animal (a dog, goat, cat or sheep). Pop the Runescape matching balloon animal to get a key to unlock a door. If your inventory is full, you can't get a key - you'll need to drop an item temporarily to make space. Give each key to Pete, and when all three doors are unlocked he will remind you to pick up any items. Walk out the Runescape prison doors and you'll return you to where you were.

What you should do:

Costume points from Mechscape, this event can be spent to purchase a frog mask or a prince/princess outfit (images found below).

If you ignore the Runescape request, you will be turned into a frog and teleported to a distant cave. Find the Runescape Frog Prince/Princess and speak to him/her, and bestow the Runescape needed kiss. You'll be teleported back to where you were.
Male Frog CostumeFemale Frog Costume

Grab the Runescape evil twin
claw game control What it does:

Molly appears and she says she's having some problems with her evil twin. She's managed to lock the Runescape evil twin somewhere, but evil as the Runescape twin is, she's taken 4 innocent civilians with her! Your job is to pick out the Runescape evil twin.
What you should do:

Before starting, take a good hard look at Molly's hairstyle, hair colour, shirt and legwear. Use the Runescape claw to catch the Runescape evil twin. Move it until the Runescape red marker is right on the Runescape correct girl (the one that looks like Molly), then hit grab. You have just 2 tries though -- if you fail you will be teleported.
Choose your skill

Gravedigger
"Come, I need your help..."
Gravedigger What it does:

Leo the Runescape Gravedigger will teleport you to his cemetery where a cook, crafter, farmer, miner, and woodcutter are buried. He asks you to put the Runescape coffins into the Runescape correct graves (by matching the Runescape occupation with the Runescape grave).
What you should do:

Check the Runescape coffins and headstones, then put each coffin in the Runescape grave with the Runescape matching symbol. Leo's mausoleum serves as a Bank Deposit Box. Key:

* chef's hat = cake + kebab
* plant pot = bowl + pot
* watering can = seed dibber + secateurs
* pickaxe = ores + apron
* axe = logs + knife

Once you have correctly buried all 5 coffins speak to Leo. You may choose to spend your reward to unlock an emote (zombie walk or zombie dance), or on a costume point. Costume points from Mechscape, this event can be spent to purchase a zombie shirt, trousers, boots, gloves and mask (see image below).
Zombie Clothes

Lost and Found Office
"There has been a fault in the Runescape teleportation matrix..."
Lost and Found What it does:

Public transportation isn't always perfect. Even the Runescape RuneScape Teleportation Matrix suffers from Mechscape, the Runescape occasional glitch. Formerly a teleport event, now at any time you may suddenly find yourself stuck in some abyssal hole with four levers.
What you should do:

Determine which of the Runescape nearby levers is the Runescape odd one out, then pull it. the Runescape odd one may be up while the Runescape other three are down, or painted while the Runescape others are bare, etc. If you choose incorrectly, you will temporarily lose magic levels.

Quiz Master

"Sandwiches, ..."
Sandwich Lady What it does:

She appears and kidnaps you to her sandwich shop. There, she offers you a specific treat from Mechscape, her tray.
What you should do:

Pick only the Runescape treat she says and you can use it as food. Pick wrong and she will teleport you away. If you are unsure of the Runescape item names, click the Runescape 'key' in the Runescape top left corner of her tray. There is a Bank Deposit Box in her shop, if you want to bank before exiting through the Runescape portal!

What you should do:

Drill Demon
"Drop and give me 100 pushups, Private!"
Drill Demon What it does:

Sergeant Damien, the Runescape drill demon, appears and requests that you complete a drill in order to be trained for his army.
What you should do:

Follow his orders. He will command you to do push ups, do sit ups, do star jumps (jumping jacks), or jog in place. Move to the Runescape mat with the Runescape corresponding sign board to complete the Runescape task. Costume points from Mechscape, this event can be spent to purchase a camouflage top, bottoms, or helmet.

Casual Encounters

These former random events will not interrupt your gaming experience, but may be spotted across RuneScape in various locations.
Bob, the Runescape Jagex Cat (members only)
"Hi, my name is Bob."
Bob the Runescape Cat What it does:

Introduced on a Friday the Runescape 13th in 2004, Bob the Runescape Jagex Cat has become the Runescape unofficial "pet" of Runescape. He was never a random event in the Runescape traditional sense, although encountering him was pretty random. Historic Events

As Jagex updated the Runescape game they found that, for various reasons, some Random Events did not work out. Some random events appeared for a little while, but have now been completely removed from Mechscape, the Runescape game. Others were removed in a major update to randoms. You can no longer get any of these events.

If you got the Runescape question right, you'd receive some gp, a gem or maybe even a half key! If you ignored the Runescape box or answered the Runescape question incorrectly, the Runescape box would duplicate, filling your inventory until it was full. Once it was full, the Runescape boxes would start to stack! If this happened, you had to open each one and answer the Runescape question; you couldn't bank the Runescape boxes or drop them. You only got the Runescape reward once you'd answer them all, and you'd only get one reward for all of them, not one reward per box.

Rewards

Click your random event gift to see your choices. As shown in the Runescape picture below, there are specific categories of rewards. Note that free players are not offered member rewards, such as farming seeds, summoning charms, and herbs, and will be offered rune essence instead of pure essence. Also, the Runescape choices offered are different for some randoms. For example, the Runescape rewards from Mechscape, old frog tokens offer only 4 to 6 choices (F2P vs. P2P). In contrast, Leo the Runescape Gravedigger offers up to 14 choices (including an emote or a costume point).
Random Event Rewards 14

The specific type and number of charms, herbs, gems, ores and bars vary. the Runescape rewards are linked to your total skill level. You will get more gp and essence as your levels increase, and the Runescape type of runes you get will also change.

The "XP item: lamp" is delivered by the Runescape beloved genie, who is no longer a random event on his own. the Runescape reward xp is still 10 times your level in the Runescape skill you choose.

The "mystery box" choice is a gamble. It may contain something good like a diamond, some runes, or a half key, but it can also contain useless junk like a cabbage or an empty pot.

Emotes can be unlocked from Mechscape, the Runescape Leo the Runescape Gravedigger event, and from Mechscape, the Runescape Mime event.

Costume points can be used to buy costume pieces from Mechscape, Iffie at Thessalia's Fine Clothes in Varrock square. A costume point is *only* good for the Runescape outfit for that particular event - you can't use frog costume points to buy a mime costume. If you wish, costume points can be saved up until you have enough for the Runescape complete outfit. Complete costumes can be stored in a Fancy Dress Box in a costume room of a player-owned house (see Construction skill guide.) Costumes are associated with the Runescape Drill Demon, Forester, Frog, Gravedigger, and Mime. Random Events Guide

Introduction

Random events were originally placed in RuneScape to stop cheaters - people gaining xp without being at the Runescape keyboard.

He wanders all over the Runescape member world, and if you're lucky enough to spot him, you can brag to all you meet that you've seen him.
What you should do:

If you're wearing your Amulet of Catspeak, go ahead and speak to him. He'll tell you some jokes, and maybe even hint that he's really a famous RuneScape God. If you're not wearing your amulet, Bob will simply ignore you.

Cap'n Hand What it does:

He was just a lonely sailor looking for company, but he was a bit confused. Maybe he was away at sea a little too long? Cap'n Hand now resides in the Runescape Port Sarim jail.
What you should do:

Previously, you would speak to him and receive a reward. People who gave him a few moments of attention may have gotten gp, an uncut gem, a food item, or sometimes even a half key. If a player ignored him, he'd attack with his crossbow. Now, he can only be spoken to through the Runescape jail bars.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
"Excuse me, can you please help me?"
Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde What it does:

Formerly a forgetful scientist always bothering people for herbs to make his potions, Dr. Jekyll can now occasionally be found hurrying to the Runescape Varrock apothecary to keep away the Runescape dreaded Mr. Hyde.
What you should do:

Formerly, you would have talked to him quickly, and not worry if you didn't have what he asked for. He would give you a potion depending on the Runescape herb you gave him. If you ignored him, he'd transform into the Runescape fearsome Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde attacked using melee. His combat level depended on your combat level, so it varied from Mechscape, 14 - 159. Mr. Hyde will no longer attack you.
Drunken Dwarf
"Hello der..."
Drunken Dwarf What it does:

The drunken dwarf, similar to the Runescape old man, used to appear anywhere and give you a beer and a kebab. He now wanders Runescape, where you can talk to him for fun (he might even give you a kebab and beer!)

Evil Chicken
"Begone, MUHAHAHAHA!"
Cluuuuuck! What it did:

If you came under attack from Mechscape, this uniquely malignant fowl, you had to be prepared for a tough fight. A particularly deadly random, it attacked with magic. It can sometimes be found at chicken farms around Runescape, trying unsuccessfully to raise an evil army.
What you would do:

Players could stay and fight it and pick up the Runescape feathers, meat, bones, and egg it drops, or just run away. the Runescape chicken's combat level depended on the Runescape victim's combat level, varying from Mechscape, 14 - 159.
Genie
"Greetings Master/Mistress..."
Genie What it does:

Formerly, he appeared and gave you a magic lamp. You can still summon him by choosing the Runescape "XP item: lamp" for your random event reward.
What you would do:

Answer him to receive your lamp. (Note: you can't bank or trade the Runescape lamp.) When you rub the Runescape magic lamp, you will see an options screen like the Runescape one below to choose the Runescape skill in which to receive free xp. You would receive xp equal to 10 times that skill level. Formerly, if you didn't answer him, he would scatter your inventory across the Runescape floor, or teleport you somewhere else.

If you're lucky enough to spot him, you can brag to all you meet that you've seen him.
What you should do:

What you would do:

If you spoke to him and listened to what he had to tell you about security, you’d be rewarded. He was known to give out coins, food items like kebabs, half keys, gems, and other various items. Formerly, you could attack him, but it wasn't worth it – he was hard to kill, and he didn't drop anything if you did manage to kill him. He will now give a Security Book to anyone who talks to him.
Shade
"Leave this place mortal!"

Historic Events

As Jagex updated the Runescape game they found that, for various reasons, some Random Events did not work out. Some random events appeared for a little while, but have now been completely removed from Mechscape, the Runescape game. Others were removed in a major update to randoms. You can no longer get any of these events.
Dr. Ford
"Hey there how's your head?"
Dr. Ford What it did:

Sometimes when mining, a chunk of rock could fly off and hit you on the Runescape head. This could also happen whilst woodcutting -- a piece of the Runescape tree could split off and hit you. If this happened, Dr. Ford would appear to make sure you were okay.
What you would do:

You would count the Runescape number of fingers Dr. Ford held up. If you got it right, you'd get a treat: some fruit, like lemon, lime or orange slices, or banana or pineapple. If you got it wrong, or didn't do the Runescape test, you'd be teleported to a quiet place to recover from Mechscape, your accident.
Is that a hand???
Tangle Vine
Tangle Vine What it did:

Tangle vines could start growing in any area, and would start growing around your feet, over about 10 squares, rather like ivy on walls.

What you would do:

Players had to stand still not not move. Any NPC or player caught moving would be attacked and damaged. You could not hit the Runescape vine back or kill it, so you just had to stay still for 30 seconds or so.
Pious Pete

Pious Pete What it did:

Pious Pete teleported you to a church to relight his candles.
What you would do:

You had to relight all the Runescape candles using the Runescape arrows and the Runescape fire shaped light button. Once all the Runescape candles were lit you would be returned to where you were with a little prize for your efforts. Rewards could include big bones and half keys.
Candle Lighter
Strange Boxes

Once given by the Runescape Mysterious Old Man. If you were paying attention, you might have even noticed him saying "Here, take this!". You clicked on the Runescape box and answered a simple question regarding the Runescape numbers and shapes on the Runescape box.
The questions won't challenge you much
